We are having a great time filling up the greenhouse with strong beautiful seedlings! After starting the early onions and tomatoes in our basement, we quickly realized we were out of space and transferred everything to the greenhouse to enjoy some strong sunlight and fresh air. Now the main seeding greenhouse is full to bursting so we are transfering hardy seedlings to the space in the unheated greenhouse that is not occupied by overwintered spinach.
So far the cool weather has not led to any setbacks in our production schedule, though like everyone else we are a bit weary of the snow. We had some trouble getting beets and spinach established last spring (which was also cold), so this year we are transplanting the first generation of these crops into our field tunnels to ensure good yields. With warm weather in the forecast, we predict that we’ll be pulling the plastic cover over the field tunnels early next week and will be transplanting soon thereafter. We expect to be planting the first beds of sugar snap peas the week of April 20th.
Tomatoes, greens and herbs are well on their way for our seedling sales in late April and early May. The spinach has woken up from its winter slumber and we’re harvesting the first crop for the Wakefield market this week. Natalie and Caleb, our farm workers, will be arriving from Halifax in late April, provided they can dig their way out of the snowdrifts!
Egg share update: we will once again be providing our fresh organic farm eggs to our CSA partners this year. We’ll send out a special call to sign up for eggs later in the spring when we know how many shares we can offer.

Bulletin avril 2015
