1) Spring seeding
We’re waiting patiently for the winter chill to turn into a spring thaw. Though it is still cold, we are noticing that the local wildlife has been more active now that there are noticeably more sunlight hours every day.
Seeding begins this week with onions, leeks, celeriac, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant! We have been checking in our seed shipments and building full-spectrum light tables in our basement to accommodate the very early generations of seedlings. Using the basement allows us to take advantage of household heat. When the days get longer and the outside temperature climbs a little more, we will transfer the seeding operation to our new heated greenhouse and get into the full swing of spring production.
2) CSA signup
Now is the time to sign up for this year’s CSA baskets! We need to know who is on board as early as possible so we can finalize our production schedule. 3) New drop-off in Low
We are adding a third drop-off in our new “hometown” of Low (the municipality just north of La Pêche). We are still confirming the location and time of the drop-off (most likely in the town of Low along the 105). Please give us a call if you have questions about this drop-off.
4) What is certified organic?
There has been some discussion lately in regards to “certified” and “non-certified” organic farms, especially in Ontario, where producers can use the term “organic” without being certified organic growers (in Quebec, only certified producers can use the term).
Simply put, certified organic means that under no circumstances can we use synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Furthermore, we must adhere to strict production and sourcing guidelines for our seeds, potting soil, fertility and amendments, and we must keep thorough records of our purchases and sales, the history of the land, and all aspects of our vegetable production.
We choose to be organic farmers because it is the best way to farm. We choose to certify our production because it builds trust with consumers, and because it sets a national standard that we believe all farmers can and should strive towards. We work hard for the privilege of being certified organic, and we think that the people who eat our food respect and support the work we do.
We have been certified organic for two years with EcoCert Canada, and, since our new land has been in certified organic production for the past three years, we are happily able to keep our full certification. 1) Semis de printemps
On attend avec patience la fin de l’hiver et l’arrivé du printemps. Il fait encore froid, mais on observe que la faune locale est de plus en plus actif maintenant que les jours deviennent de plus en plus longs.
Ls semences commencent cette semaine avec les oignons, les poireaux, le céléri-rave, les tomates, les poivrons et les aubergines! On a reçu tous nos paquets de semences, et on consruit des tables de semences avec des “grow-lights” dans le sous-sol pour accommoder la première géneration de semis. On utilise notre propre soul-sol pour prendre avantage de la chaleur de la maison. Quand les journées deviennt plus longues et la temperature hausse un peu, la production battera son plein dans la nouvelle serre chauffée.
2) Inscription ASC
C’est le temps pour vous inscrire pour vos paniers bio! On a besoin de savoir aussitôt que possible qui est à bord pour finaliser nos plans de production. S’inscrire tôt est un geste de support pour les fermiers qui vont vous apporter des belles légumes délicieuses pendant toute l’été. 3) Nouveau point de chute a Low

3) Certification biologique
Récamment, on entend discuter la différence entre les fermes “biologiques” et ceux qui sont “certifiés biologiques”, surtout en Ontario, ou les producteurs peuvent utiliser le mot “biologique” même quand ils ne sont pas certifiés (au Québec, le mot est reservé pour les producteurs certifiés).
Simplement dit, la production certifié biologique veut dire que le producteur est interdit d’utiliser les pesticides, les herbicides et les fertillisants synthetiques. On est aussi obligé à adhérer à des normes strictes pour la procuration de nos semences, notre terreau, les amendements, et le composte, et on est obligé de garder des traces completes pour tous nos achats et ventes, pour l’histoire du terrain, et tous les aspects de notre production.
On a choisi de faire une production biologique parce que c’est la meilleure façon de produire des légumes. On choisit de certifier notre production pour développer la confiance des consommateurs, et parce que ceci cré un standard national que chaque producteur devrait s’efforcer a adopter. On travaille fort pour le privilège d’être certifié biologique, et on croit que les personnes qui consomment nos légumes respectent et soutiennent nos efforts.
Nous production est certifié bio depuis deux ans avec EcoCert Canada, et, parce que la nouvelle à été en production certifié bio depuis trois ans, on est content de pouvoir garder notre certification.
