It has certainly been an eventful and productive summer! On June 4 we welcomed our second son Avery Scott-Williams into the world, and for the past two months we have been balancing life with a newborn with midsummer farm work. Some days we can barely keep up, and some days it’s a blessing to sit quietly with a napping baby and enjoy the summer breeze.
Our crops have been growing well this summer, though the cooler, cloudy weather delayed the tomatoes by a week or so, and excessive rain can cause nutrient loss in our light soil. All of our hard work weeding and trellising in June and July has paid off and we’re proud to say that the farm is looking quite tidy. Our chickens and pigs are scratching, pecking and rooting about in the cover crops (fields of oats, rye, clover or buckwheat that we plant in rotation with vegetable crops to replenish the soil), helping us to reduce pest insects and weeds while fertilizing the soil.
At the height of summer we are continually harvesting beans, cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers and eggplant from seedlings we transplanted in May. The first wave of spring crops has disappeared from the field, and the last of the greenhouse seedlings have been transplanted and will develop into fall greens (cabbages, lettuce, etc.). We’ve also begun our big harvests: at the end of July we harvested 7500 bulbs of garlic that are now drying in our farm shed. As we move towards the fall, we’ll be bringing in storage potatoes and onions, followed later by cabbages, roots and winter squash. For now, however we are enjoying the abundance and variety of the summer harvest!

L’été est bien productif et mouvementé! Le 4 juin nous avons aceuillis au monde notre deuxième fils, Avery Scott-Williams, et depuis sa naissance on balance la vie avec un nouveau-né avec les demandes de la ferme en plein été. Il y a des jours ou on a de la misère a tout suivre, et d’autre jours ou on apprécie la chance de se détendre avec un bébé qui fait la sieste.
Les légumes poussent bien cet été, mais les jours frais et nuageux a causé un délai d’une ou deux semaines dans les tomates, et la pluie excessive peut causer une perte de nutriments dans notre sol léger. Nos effots de désherbage et a faire des trellis au débût de la saison a donné des bons resultats et on est fier que la ferme est bien propre. Nos poules et nos cochons grattent, picotent et farfouillent dans les engrais verts (les champs d’avoine, de siegle, de trèfle ou de sarrasin qu’on plante en rotation avec les légumes pour nourrir le sol) et nous aident a réduire les insectes ravageurs et les mauvaises herbes, et en plus, fertilisent le sol.
En plein été on fait une récolte continuelle de haricots, de concombres, de courgettes, de tomates de poivrons et d’aubergines des semis qu’on a planté en mai. La première vague de cultures de printemps sont disparus des champs, et les derniers semis de la serre sont plantés et deviendront les verdures d’automne (choux, laitue, etc.). On a aussi commencé les grandes récoltes: à la fin de juillet nous avons récolté 7500 bulbes d’ail, qui sèchent maintenant dans la remise. En trajet vers l’automne, on vera la récolte des pommes de terre d’entreposage et des oignons, ainsi que les choux, les racines et les courges d’hiver. Pour l’instant on en profite d’une récolte abondante et varié des délices d’été!
VISITE DE FERME 24 AOÛT (DERNIÈRE MINUTE)
On propose une visite de ferme cette dimanche 24 août. Tour de la ferme a 11h, suivi par un dîner picnic. Confirmez que vous êtes intéréssés au plus tard le jeudi 21 août (si il y a assez d’interêt on procedera avec la visite.)
