We are so excited to be out and about now that spring-like conditions have arrived (in fits and starts, of course)! We took advantage of the warm weather last week to clear snow, tidy up the wash station, and prep the greenhouse. In a few days, the onions and leeks that are germinating in our basement under grow lights will move to the greenhouse. We’ve created a mini-tunnel on the seeding tables inside the greenhouse to keep the seedlings protected during the cold nights of early spring, and once the soil warms up we’ll be direct-seeding spring greens. The spinach in our unheated greenhouse is just waking up; we’ll see new growth in a few weeks.
We are also seeding tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, greens and herbs for our seedling sales in mid-May. This year we’re going to offer many bee-friendly herb seedlings like Anis Hyssop, Bergamot, Catnip, Lavender and Oregano. Pollinator-friendly herbs are a great way to increase yields in your home garden and to encourage bee life in your neighbourhood!
Below, We’ve added a photo taken around the fall equinox almost exactly six months ago. At this time of change at the farm, it’s an interesting portrait of another moment of transition. From left to right: summer tomatoes in the high tunnel, the far field recently seeded to cover crop, a bed of summer greens turned under, a new bed of mesclun greens, fall scallions that will overwinter for spring harvest, a bed of spinach under row cover, a bed of spinach trials for the Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security, and winter squash in the greenhouse.
There is still a lot of snow on the ground, but the growing season is well under way here at the farm. We hope you share our excitement for the coming spring and summer!

Bulletin Mars 2015
Maintenant que le temps plus clément est arrivé (à coups, bien sur), on est ravi d’être occupé en dehors! On a pris avantage du beau temps la semaine passé pour déneiger, pour ranger la salle de lavage, et pour préparer la serre. Dans quelques jours, on va amener à la serre les semis d’oignons et de poireaux qui germinent dans notre sous-sol chauffé. On a bâti un mini-tunnel sur les tables dans la serre pour bien protéger les semis contre les nuits frais du débût printemps, et quand le sol est bien rechauffé on va semer les verdures de printemps. Les épinards dans notre grand tunnel commencent à se reveiller, et on espère de voir des nouveaux feuilles dans quelques semaines.
On sême aussi les tomates, les poivrons, les aubergines, les verdures et les fines herbes pour nos ventes de semis à la mi-mai. Cette année on va aussi offrir plusieurs fines herbes bien-aimés par les abeilles: Agastache, Bergamote, Cataire, Lavande et Origan, parmi d’autres. C’est la meilleure façon d’améliorer la production dans votre jardin, et d’encourager la survie des abeilles!
Ci-dessous, on a inclu un photo pris vers l’équinoxe d’automne il y a presque six mois. A ce présent moment de transition à la ferme, c’est un portrait intéressant d’un autre instant de changement. De gauche à droite: les tomates dans le grand tunnel, un champ récemment semé en engrais vert, une planche de vieilles verdures retournés, une nouvelle planche de mesclun, une planche d’échalottes qui vont hiverner et seront récoltés au printemps, une planche d’épinards sous bâche flottant, une planche d’épinards qui sont partie d’un essai pour l’Initiative de la famille Bauta sur la sécurité des semences au Canada, et les courges d’hiver dans la serre.
Il y a encore beaucoup de neige par terre, mais la saison productive est bien entamé ici à la ferme. On espère que vous partagez notre enthousiasme pour le printemps et l’été qui arrivent!
